Viennese Coffeehouses

The Viennese Coffeehouse is an institution and the Viennese Coffeehouse culture is an immaterial world heritage, listed by UNESCO. The typical Viennese coffee house is furnished with round marble tables and chairs made out of bentwood, covered with dark red velvet. The grumpy waiter is part of the picture. In the past the Viennese coffee house was a place to write, check out the encyclopedia (present in many coffee houses), read newspapers (up to 250 different ones), meet friends and discuss the issues of the day, play chess, cards and pool. Every professional and social group had its favorite coffee house. Well known are:

Things you should not do in Vienna

Buy bottled water
Vienna, as a capital, has the best drinking water in the world (I am not exaggerating!). The tap water comes from the Alps and has an excellent taste. On the other side a bottle of water in a restaurant might cost more than a small beer or a glass of wine. Drink the tap water and order a small beer or a glass of wine in restaurants.

Drive your car to see the city
Vienna is relatively small, the city centre is mostly pedestrian, public transportation is very reliable and inexpensive. Leave your car in a garage and explore the city on foot or by public transportation. Take tram 1 and 2 to make a full round of the Ringstrasse.

Visit only the city centre
Vienna is not only St. Stephen’s, the Hofburg, the Ringstrasse and Schönbrunn. To get a real taste of the city and local life, take public transportation and see some neighborhoods like Yppenmarkt, Baumgartnerhöhe, Neustift.

Balls in Vienna 2017

The carnaval (Fasching) and the ball season are in their heat!!

The craziest ball is the Regenbogenball on Jannuary 28th, 2017 in Parkhotel Schönbrun. The most glorious ball is the Opernball on February 23rd, 2017, takes place in the Vienna State Opera. The sweetest ball is the Bonbonball on the next day, February 24th, 2017 in Konzerthaus. See the dates of all Viennese balls this year. Highlights of the ball-season in Vienna 2017

Ai Weiwei in Vienna

The 21er Haus in Vienna dedicates an exhibition to the contemporary Chinese artist Ai Weiwei called „translocation – transformation“. His Zodiac Heads/Circle of Animals ornate the area around the water basin in the baroque garden in front of the Upper Belvedere palace. These are bronze statues, copies of ornaments of a water clock from the imperial summer residence Yuanming Yuan in Peking.
In the water basin is another construction of life jackets draped like lotus flowers, forming the letter F, which stand for Fake, Finance, Freedom. The life jackets we used by refugees who had made it to the Greek island of Lesbos.
